Black Hole – Media
language
The Setting is placed in a 21 century office, which has a
printer (as a prop) that is and the piece of paper that is also the main
equipment throughout this piece of film when producing the black hole. This set
the mood for the audience as a normal working day. Also this brings in the character. This then
has to link to costume, where the male is wearing a smart shirt and tie.
We know the male is at work by the job that he is doing. By
the messy hair and the appearance not the best he doesn’t like his job and this
comes across to the audience.
Also he being alone throughout the scenes could indicate
that he doesn’t have many working colleagues. This could also show the
appearance of the male character. However when the male finds out what the
black hole can do the colour changes. The colour changes from light to desaturated
when the character turns greedy. This
then suggest that by doing this us as a audience can see the emotion and the
sides of the temptation of greed.
With the darkness colour nearing the end we also have a
point of view shot when looking at the door and looking at the black hole.
Again this suggests greed the male has. This is a excellent shot because the
director has chosen this so that the audience gets the idea about the
temptation of greed, like the story of Adam and Eve.
By using the close ups and Medium close up mostly throughout
we can as a audience see the facial reaction and body language change from the
beginning to the end to show the power of greed.
For example....
These screen shots show the turning points when having the
power in his hands that then later on in the film punishes him for it.
Low angle when looking down in to the black hole is a good
camera shot. This towards the audience looks like a real black hole and makes
it believable. This grabs the audience attention and the main character also.
When looking at the editing side, when using Continuity
editing it means that the director can cut shots to tell a story this in this
case creates realism to the audience. However to create the bond between the
character and the audience the director has used a eyeline match, so that the
audience can see what the character sees.
This brings the attention to the audience and makes them
more involved in the film and keeps them interested. We also see the transition
between the character from the start when working then turns to greed, this is
also triggered by the Straights cuts that are all the way through. This then
allows the audience to see the male actor change throughout the film.
From the start and to the end there is ambient sound
throughout. The main character that we don’t know any information about, looks
very bored and tired from work. We know this but the setting of the office and
the clothing of the male. We can hear that from the sound of his breath, it’s
very slow. From him pressing the button vigorously we can see that he doesn’t
like his job and from this he is frustrated, that makes him kick out of the
printer. This suggests that he is not respected enough in his job by no other
workers being alongside him.
The repeating beeping sound carries on even after the paper
has been printed. This shows the director using the sound bridge to create
suspense on the character and the black hole.
When the character realises what he has seen they have used selective
sound which is used in this scene to emphasis the meaning of the black hole.
This creates mystery for the male character. When the male character puts his
hand to retrieve the plastic cup the selective sound gets stronger near his
hand moves towards the black hole. While at the same time the ambient sound of
the beeping continues to keep the suspense of what he is going to do with the
object in hand.
Overall when looking at media language for the film “black
hole” using the four technical codes I have shown where greed has turned the
character and has almost made him a villain before he makes his own
downfall.
Silent
Things – Representation.
The text shows both
non stereotypical and stereotypical ways, we see in the short film that there
are positive and negatives throughout the piece.
For an example, at the
start of the film a group of people or a gang is being verbally aggressive. To
comprising the end where the officer doesn’t understand the condition so they
just take him away. In my opinion I think that they are stereotypically doing
this so other people don’t get unsettled rather than helping the gentleman
first. This then will be a negative then a positive again so this makes the
contrast and lets the audience realise this. This then gets the audience
involved and starts to feel sorry for him.
The director i think
is trying to persuade the audience to not think of the stereotypical version
but to also show that they are equal. However by showing both sides it is
persuading the audience to think in a non stereotypical manner.
Mise en scene: at the
start we see a teenage gang- the difference that is shown is their clothing and
them in a big group. Comparing that to just the single man and a nice cheerful
girl with him.
Editing- the pace was
at a medium speed however quickened when the man started to get aggravated by
something. This was to show his emotion and make this clear to the
audience. The continuity editing the
director chose to do was to tell the story about how this man lives simply everyday
flying his kite, using mostly straight cuts throughout to show this.
The setting in on the
beach front but we don’t know the location still. I think this was the best
setting for this film because i think the director is trying to show the
audience that the male character is at his peace when he is near the ocean.
This makes him go into his own little world where no one can hurt him.
Sound of ambient when
at the beach to pick up the sea noise and the air as well blowing the kite. We
mostly have dialogue between the characters with mostly using low angle camera
shot to pick up their facial reaction. From the directors point of view using
this method for the disability character means that the audience at all times
knows what he’s feeling or when he’s going to react to something good or bad.
Overall, the short
film shows that the male with the disability has no power or even status this
is shown from the start and at the end. He only wants to fly his kite and do
the simple things in life with no aggravation. This does throughout the film
did not always happen. By using the 4 technical codes and see the different
stereotypes on disability us as a audience can clearly see the transaction of
the two.
Mix Tape – Audience
When looking at the target audience in this piece the
director has i think chose a older generation for the film kids that like older
music film in the and that will appeal to them.
Mix tape fans to the band or new music, however now it’s all Cds and
electronically.
We see in the piece that the boy however is using the mix
tape to either to impress her or because he likes her and wants to make her
happy. He has a good relationship with
her and the mother. We see that the boy and girl
mix tape are used to attracted new fans
however the boy has used the mix tape as a present from him to show he likes
her. His and her family are both working class because the mix tape is a older
version then a normal Cds the kid can’t afford to buy or listen to updated
music so listens to his dads. This then leads to the housing to be in a poor
area because they are built in together.
These show council housing in a
poor area. So the mix tape even know is small is a big deal to them and means a
lot to them.
When listening to the music they feel
close this is shown by the match on action that is used.
We also see the lighting is different in the rooms. Ones
very dark and glooming however the other is very clean and white. The girl goes
to school however the boy doesn’t. So the boy and his mix tapes are the only
thing he has.
Overall, when watching this short film the audience will
feel the sweet and loving emotion from watching this. From analysing the clip
and using the four technical codes to show why the director has chosen this to
connect with the audience through the use of music and kindness, so that the
audience are interested in watching this.
We also see they have both got different lives but come together when
listening to the mix tapes.
“Lovefield” – Narrative
Love filed is non liner
because it is told out of order. The audience doesn’t know the characters name
or what they do. The start of the film comparing to the end outcome is
fantastic because the enigma shown all the way through get the audience
guessing on what’s going to happen next.
The animal that is mostly shown throughout is the black crow. A black
crow normally suggest death, by seeing the dropped phone on the ground the
audience could think that there a murder that has happened.
We hear the creaking sound of the sign and the crow making a
unnerving sound. This then all ready
puts people on edge. This then slowly fades with the beeping phone getting
louder with no ambient sound taking place.
The setting is taking place on a out of nowhere filed that also
indicates secrecy and mystery.
The director has chosen to use restricted narration when
making this short film. The character knows more than the audience and this
makes the enigma show throughout. If this was unrestricted narration then it
wouldn’t make this film exciting to watch and would bore the audience when
watching. For example we see the male
with a knife and just the sound of the knife going in to the floor with blood
on it. This to the audience will drag them in to the story because they want to
find out what has happened. However if they know that he is a helping the women
to deliver the baby that has just been born then they would lose interest and
will be boring, this looses the thriller theme.
In this clip of the film
there is a women crying ( the sound of being in agony) the foot that we see
tenses up when this happens. However when the crying stops from the women the
foot and leg stops moving. The camera angle is only placed here on the women so
that we cant see what’s occurred. This then makes the audience think that
something awful has happened.
Todorov has 5 stages that are equilibrium, disruption, recognition, at
attempt to repair and finally new equilibrium
What the director has chose to use
for the film love filed is new equilibrium. This means it is different from
where the story began. So when liking to the film we see at the start there is
a lot of pain and unknowing feeling of death that is maybe happening. However
we see at the end of the film there is new life that a child has been born and
the male that we as a audience thought was a threat was actually the hero. Therefore when looking at Vladimir Propp the
Russian theorist he analysed fairytales.
So the male starts out to be the villain in the audience eyes but
however is the hero all along.
Levi Strauss says that in a film or
tv programme ‘narrative can only end on a resolution of conflict’. This can
also be portrayed by the love hate and panic emotion in the films; this is known
as binary oppositions. In this short
film there is no conflict between the two characters. However the panic that is
produce by the audience because of the enigma building in the sequence. At the
start there is dark movement when the camera movement is used to create a death
theme. Also a light outcome when we as a audience gets the truth on what’s has
occurred.
Overall, when looking at the theorist and the director,
using these to create the realism, and conflict. That the audience in their
mind think they are going to witness, however finding out that hasn’t occurred,
but the opposite of a child being born. This by using the 4 technical codes has
created enigma, this has made the audience to engage with the film and to be
more interested in the film as well.
This is me - Genre
This is a comedy genre that intends to make humour on the
fact that the male character is on life support and is mocking the way of how
it happened and why it happened. By using the four technical codes and Semantic
and syntactic codes i can find out why the director has chosen this a comedy
and why this will be good for the audience to watch and enjoy. I will also be
linking this to Neale’s and Buckingham theory’s on repetition, variation,
negotiation and change.
The gentleman that has had the head injury was caused by a
toy plane. In hospital we guess the wife next to hip reading a cruise vacation
leaflet doesn’t really want to be with him. While he himself is the narrator
all they through. Another stereo type is that the man is fat and sitting down
sunbathing. This also makes this humour for the audience because it switches
from a dark hospital bed to a sunny sun bathing day having a drink and chilling
out.
We then have a camera pan out to show the full body and this
adds humour to the dark situation at the start of the film.
Even in this screen shot he is still alone, we still don’t
see his wife. This could be a indication that things are not as it should be
when looking at their relationship.
Black Hole - a few more images would help in this analysis. Break up its monotonous presentation - different colours for different technical odes - orange for editing etc. Make sub titles bigger , use different colour and add "What can i take away with me from this film?"
ReplyDeleteSilent things - how has the director used the 4 technical odes to communicate his Aspergers? You touch on this when discussing editing when he has a paniccc attacck, however, it is more than just editing -what do M en S, CW and Sound add aswell?
Lovefield - both story and plot are linear! Overall a good effort.
This is me - is rather under developed Luke - this is a comedy - what makes it a comedy - you have touhed on a few things.
Still room for improvement Luke. Try to get away from the standard format - vary font, use colour et.
You made this deadline and that is a positive. You can clearly analyse.
ReplyDeleteTarget - to improve you need to address three things
1, The writing on the post is tot difficult to read - too small and also it is too monotonous - all the same font, no colour etc. Remember that this is a post and you are marked on its presentation. You can return to this and improve.
2. Use more terminology - you have used some theory which is good but use more terminology - diegetic, parallel, off screen etc,
3. Try to write more, you lack depth to get into the high bands.
However, this is still a good effort and I think an improvement on last year. So some encouragement here.
High 2 / Low 3.
